Our patented D-Flex triangular profile reduces weight and flexes differently in opposite planes, for universally improved performance and a better fishing experience.
The problem with circular
A circular or otherwise symmetrical blank flexes identically in every direction. Convenient for manufacturing, but a structural compromise for performance.
The casting stroke demands stiffness, for efficient energy loading and release. While playing a fish demands compliance — for cushion, feedback and controlled give.
A circular rod offers both equally. And therefore excels at neither.
The triangular answer
A triangular blank has two distinct structural axes:
Primary (high stiffness) → casting plane → powerful, efficient, precise.
Secondary (higher compliance) → opposite plane → sensitive, forgiving, responsive.
This performance characteristic is a scientific fact, and along with several other benefits is the reason why bamboo rod makers utilized triangular geometry for decades.
Carbon Fibre
When carbon fibre (used interchangeably with 'graphite') arrived it was widely believed that the manufacturing process made triangular impossible. Until now.
The founder of D-Flex, a Doctor of Physics, applied Reuleaux Triangle geometry to solve the manufacturing problem — and teamed up with a world-class design engineer to develop the proprietary mandrel design and fabrication technology that makes triangular carbon fibre construction a reality.
The Hyperlite RLX
The result is the world's first triangular carbon fibre fly rod. Two initial models, one geometry — and performance characteristics that no circular rod can replicate.
Dual-Action
Stiffer in the casting plane for powerful, efficient energy transfer. More compliant in the opposite plane for cushion, feedback and sensitivity when playing fish. A circular rod cannot offer both. The only dual-action modern fly rod in the world.
Lightest in class
Structurally more efficient than circular — a triangle is inherently stronger. The same power rating requires less material. Less material means less weight. The 9ft #5/6 weighs 76 grams. The 10ft #7/8, 105 grams. Less fatigue. More hours on the water.
Point & shoot accuracy
The triangular geometry generates a Triple Spine Effect: three structural reference points that self-stabilise the rod during the cast and resist rotational deviation and ovalization. The line goes where you point it. Every time.
Crisper, faster recovery
Dual-action dampens oscillation at the end of the casting stroke faster than a circular rod. Less trailing vibration. Cleaner energy transfer. Crisper presentation.
Precision energy transfer
The compliant plane loads the line optimally on the back cast. The stiff plane drives it forward with maximum efficiency. Better loops, more distance, less effort.
